WHAT IS POLYESTER?

Polyester is a synthetic polymer derived from petroleum, a natural raw material. It is formed from a condensation polymerization process involving terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol (alcohol). Polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET, is the most common polyester type, offering a high strength-to-weight ratio, moisture resistance and shatter-proof characteristics. PET is entirely recyclable and is the most recycled plastic in the world. PET and other polyester resin pellets are melted and extruded through tiny holes in metal containers known as spinnerets to produce single strands of polyester fibers that polyester manufacturers can then cut to predetermined lengths.

Most people associate polyester with polyester fabric because of its widespread use. However, polyester is also commonly sourced to create plastic bottles, consumer packaging, automotive parts and other durable molded products. Polyester is often a more cost-effective option compared to other polymers such as nylon and polypropylene (PP). Americhem can tailor polyester products to meet specific requirements through the right combination of polyester additives and high-quality resins.

THE AMERICHEM ADVANTAGE IN POLYESTER

Americhem has been developing custom material solutions for polyester fiber producers and manufacturers for over 30 years. Our designs were among the first introduced for solution-dyed carpet fibers, helping elevate us to our current position as a global manufacturer of high-performance polyester additive packages for use with PET, PBT, PTT and PETG polyesters. In addition to our broad suite of product additives, we offer the highest quality color concentrates in the industry, providing an extensive choice of shades that disperse evenly and consistently.

To ensure the polyester materials used in your product will endure when exposed to sunlight, temperature, humidity or moisture, we can perform highly accelerated interior and exterior weathering testing. This value-added capability gives our customers added peace of mind. And it allows us to incorporate suitable UV stabilizers to mitigate the effects of sunlight or fluorescent light and improve durability.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF POLYESTER?

  • Polyester is one of the world’s most popular synthetic polymer materials, demonstrating a wide variety of advantages over other industrial fibers. When considering the many benefits that
  • polyester offers, know that we have the people and the technology to optimize your success and can answer any questions you may have regarding industrial polyester choices.

POLYESTER ADVANTAGES:

  • High tensile strength
  • High elastic modulus
  • Low moisture absorption (except during extrusion processing)
  • Weather-resistant
  • Low shrinkage compared to other industrial fibers
  • Good dimensional stability (retains its shape)
  • Highly durable/excellent wear
  • Lightweight
  • Flexible
  • Wrinkle and shrink-resistant
  • Excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal and flow properties
  • Good mildew resistance
  • Good chemical resistance – repels oils, greases and alcohol
  • High environmental stress crack resistance
  • Good heat and heat aging resistance
  • Good color stability
  • Good moldability
  • Easy to clean
  • Stain-resistant
  • Can improve acoustics (in applications like automotive)
  • Completely recyclable (PET)
